How to use the subtraction worksheet generator

  1. Pick a preset for your grade, or choose your own settings.
  2. Choose the problem type. Use “Facts within” for early subtraction facts, or “Number of digits” for multi-digit subtraction.
  3. Set regrouping. Begin with no regrouping, move to always regrouping, then practise subtracting across zeros.
  4. Click Print / Save as PDF. The answer key prints on its own page.
  5. Need another copy? Click New Worksheet for fresh problems with the same settings.

Answers are never negative: the top number is always at least as large as the bottom number.

What is subtraction with regrouping?

Regrouping, often called borrowing, is needed when a digit on top is smaller than the digit below it. In 52 − 17 you can't take 7 away from 2, so one of the 5 tens is regrouped as 10 ones. The ones become 12 − 7 = 5 and the tens become 4 − 1 = 3, so the answer is 35. Worksheets with no regrouping keep every top digit at least as large as the digit below it, which lets students focus on lining up place values first.

Subtracting across zeros

Problems like 403 − 158 trip up many students. The ones need to borrow, but the tens place is empty. Students first regroup 1 hundred into 10 tens, then 1 of those tens into 10 ones, so 403 becomes 3 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones. The “Across zeros” setting makes every problem need this step, so students can practise it until it feels routine.

Tips for teachers and homeschool parents

  • Check with addition. Ask students to add the answer to the bottom number. They should get the top number.
  • Different versions for each table group. Click New Worksheet a few times so neighbours have different problems.
  • Pre-test and post-test. Use one version before a lesson and a fresh one after, with the same settings, to measure progress.
  • Save your favourite settings. The page link updates as you work. Bookmark it to rebuild the exact same worksheet later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the subtraction worksheet generator free?

Yes. You can create, print and save as many subtraction worksheets as you like, including answer keys, without an account.

What is subtraction with regrouping?

Regrouping (also called borrowing) is needed when a digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it. For example, in 52 − 17 you cannot take 7 from 2, so one ten is regrouped as 10 ones, making 12 − 7 in the ones place and 4 − 1 in the tens place.

What does subtracting across zeros mean?

Subtracting across zeros happens when you need to regroup from a place that holds a zero, as in 403 − 158. There are no tens to borrow, so you regroup a hundred into tens first, then a ten into ones. Many students find this the hardest type of subtraction, so it is worth practising on its own.

Will the answers ever be negative?

No. The top number is always greater than or equal to the bottom number, so every answer is zero or a positive whole number.

Can I get the exact same worksheet again later?

Yes. Every worksheet has a code, and the page link updates to include it. Bookmark or share the link and it will rebuild the identical worksheet and answer key.

How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?

Click Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print window. The worksheet is sized for letter paper.
