Tips for teaching money

  • Count the biggest coins first. Start with toonies and loonies, then quarters, dimes and nickels. The “largest to smallest” option sets the coins out this way.
  • Skip count. Quarters go 25, 50, 75, 100; dimes go by 10s; nickels go by 5s.
  • Count on to make change. To find the change from $5 for a $3.65 item, count up from $3.65: a dime makes $3.75, a quarter makes $4.00, and a loonie makes $5.00. The change is $1.35.
  • Use real or play money. Let students handle coins while they work through the worksheet, then turn off the ordering option for a challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Is the money worksheet generator free?

Yes. You can create, print and save as many money worksheets as you like, including answer keys, without an account.

Why are there no pennies on the Canadian worksheets?

Canada stopped distributing pennies in 2013, and cash payments are now rounded to the nearest 5 cents. The Canadian worksheets use nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies, so every amount is a multiple of 5 cents.

Can I make worksheets with US coins?

Yes. Switch Currency to United States to use pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and US bills.

What does show the amount mean?

Students are given an amount and draw or write the coins and bills that make it, using as few as possible. The answer key shows the fewest-coins solution.

Are the coins real pictures?

No. The coins and bills are simple illustrations that show each one's value, colour, relative size and shape, such as the 11-sided loonie and the two-colour toonie. They print clearly in black and white or colour.

How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?

Click Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print window. The worksheet is sized for letter paper.
