How to use the fraction worksheet generator
- Pick a preset for your grade, or choose a worksheet type yourself.
- Choose the denominators. Start with halves, thirds and fourths, then move up to 12ths.
- Turn on the helpers you need, such as fraction bars for comparing, or simplified and mixed-number answers.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. The answer key prints on its own page.
- Need another copy? Click New Worksheet for fresh problems with the same settings.
Which worksheet to use for each grade
| Grade | Worksheet types | What students practise |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 1–2 | Name and shade halves, thirds and fourths | Equal parts of a whole |
| Grade 3 | Name and shade fractions to eighths; compare with the same denominator or numerator | Reading fractions and comparing their size |
| Grade 4 | Equivalent fractions; add and subtract with like denominators | Fractions that name the same amount, and adding parts of a whole |
| Grade 5 | Add and subtract with unlike denominators; simplify fractions | Common denominators and writing fractions in lowest terms |
Key fraction ideas
Comparing fractions
When the denominators are the same, the bigger numerator means the bigger fraction: 5/8 is more than 3/8. When the numerators are the same, the smaller denominator means bigger pieces: 2/3 is more than 2/5. For any other pair, rewrite both fractions with a common denominator first.
Equivalent fractions
Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number and the fraction keeps its value: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8. The bar models make this easy to see.
Adding and subtracting fractions
With like denominators, add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7. With unlike denominators, find a common denominator first: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.
Simplifying fractions
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. For 12/18, the greatest common factor is 6, so 12/18 = 2/3.
Frequently asked questions
Is the fraction worksheet generator free?
Yes. You can create, print and save as many fraction worksheets as you like, including answer keys, without an account.
What kinds of fraction worksheets can I make?
Name the fraction from a picture, shade a fraction, compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions with like or unlike denominators, and simplify fractions.
How do you compare fractions?
If the denominators are the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is bigger. If the numerators are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator is bigger, because the pieces are larger. Otherwise, rewrite both fractions with a common denominator first.
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator, rewrite each fraction with that denominator, then add the numerators. For example, 1/3 + 1/4 becomes 4/12 + 3/12, which is 7/12.
Does the answer key show simplified answers?
Yes, when Simplify answers is ticked. The key shows the answer before and after simplifying, for example 6/8 = 3/4, and improper fractions can be shown as mixed numbers.
How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?
Click Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print window. The worksheet is sized for letter paper.
