How to make an ABC order worksheet

  1. Type or paste your words, or start from a theme.
  2. Choose how many words go in each set and how many sets fit on the page.
  3. Choose the level: easy, harder, or a mix of both.
  4. Click Print / Save as PDF. The answer key lists each set in the correct order.

Teaching alphabetical order

  • Sing or display the alphabet while students work, so they can check the order.
  • Start with first letters. When two words start with the same letter, move on to the second letter, then the third.
  • Use real words from class: spelling lists, student names or unit vocabulary make the practice meaningful.
  • Connect it to dictionaries and glossaries, where alphabetical order helps students find words quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ABC order generator free?

Yes. You can make and print as many ABC order worksheets as you like, with answer keys, without an account.

What is the difference between easy and harder sets?

Easy sets only use words that start with different letters. Harder sets include words that start with the same letter, so students must look at the second letter to put them in order.

How many words do I need?

At least as many as one set needs. For sets with no repeated words, add as many words as sets times words per set.

How are capital letters and accents sorted?

Capital and lowercase letters are treated the same, and accented letters sort with their plain letter, just like in a dictionary.

What grade is ABC order taught?

Most students learn alphabetical order by the first letter in Grade 1, and by the second and third letter in Grades 2 and 3.
