How to make a secret code puzzle

  1. Type your message, or pick a ready-made fact or quote.
  2. Choose the code: numbers in order, mixed-up numbers, or letters for a true cryptogram.
  3. Choose how much of the code key to show, and whether to give a few letters to start.
  4. Click Print / Save as PDF. The answer key shows the decoded message and the full key.

Tips for solving cryptograms

  • Start with one-letter words. In English they are almost always A or I.
  • Look for common short words like THE, AND, IS and TO.
  • Count letters. The letter that appears most is often E, T or A.
  • Watch for apostrophes. A letter after an apostrophe is usually S or T.

Ways to use secret codes in class

  • Morning message: put the day's message in code for students to decode when they arrive.
  • Review answers: hide the answer to a riddle or a review question in code.
  • Logic and problem solving: letter cryptograms with no key challenge older students and adults.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cryptogram maker free?

Yes. You can make and print as many secret code puzzles as you like, with answer keys, without an account.

What is a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a puzzle where each letter of a message has been swapped for a different letter or number. Solvers use clues such as short words and common letters to crack the code.

Which code type should I use for young students?

Choose Numbers with the full code key. Students look up each number in the key and write the letter, which is great practice for reading and letter recognition.

How do I make the puzzle harder?

Choose Letters (cryptogram) or a number code with half the key or no key. Students then work out the code from patterns, like one-letter words, which are usually A or I.

Can I use accented letters?

Yes. Accented letters are coded as their plain letter, so é is coded the same as e.
