How to use the division worksheet generator
- Pick a preset for your grade, or choose your own settings.
- For division facts, tick the divisors you want. Tick a single number, such as 6, for a “divide by 6” worksheet. Every answer is a whole number.
- For long division, choose the size of the dividend and divisor, and whether problems should have remainders.
- Choose a layout. The long division bracket leaves room under each problem for working. Horizontal suits quick fact practice.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. The answer key prints on its own page, with remainders shown as R.
Which settings to use for each grade
| Grade | Suggested settings | What students practise |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Division facts for 2, 5 and 10, then all divisors to 10 | Sharing equally and the link with multiplication |
| Grade 4 | Facts to 12; 2- and 3-digit ÷ 1-digit, first without remainders, then with | Long division steps and interpreting remainders |
| Grade 5 and up | 4-digit ÷ 1-digit; 3-digit ÷ 2-digit | Estimating with larger divisors |
Division and multiplication are a fact family
Every division fact comes from a multiplication fact. If students know 6 × 7 = 42, they also know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6. That's why division facts are easiest once the times tables are secure. Practise both with the multiplication worksheet generator, which also has a printable 1–12 multiplication chart.
The steps of long division
Long division repeats the same four steps until there are no digits left:
- Divide the first part of the dividend by the divisor.
- Multiply that answer by the divisor.
- Subtract to find what is left.
- Bring down the next digit and start again.
For example, in 347 ÷ 6: 6 goes into 34 five times (30), leaving 4. Bring down the 7 to make 47. 6 goes into 47 seven times (42), leaving 5. The answer is 57 R5. Students can check it: 57 × 6 + 5 = 347.
Tips for teachers and homeschool parents
- Start without remainders. Let students master the steps first, then switch Remainders to Mixed.
- Check with multiplication. Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. It should equal the dividend.
- One divisor at a time. Tick a single divisor to build confidence with one fact family before mixing them.
- Save your favourite settings. The page link updates as you work. Bookmark it to rebuild the exact same worksheet later.
Frequently asked questions
Is the division worksheet generator free?
Yes. You can create, print and save as many division worksheets as you like, including answer keys, without an account.
Do the division facts always have whole-number answers?
Yes. In Division facts mode every problem is built from a multiplication fact, so the answer is always a whole number with no remainder.
Can I make long division worksheets without remainders?
Yes. In Long division mode, set Remainders to None and every problem divides evenly. Choose Always for remainder practice, or Mixed for both.
What are the steps of long division?
Long division repeats four steps: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit. Students repeat the steps until there are no digits left to bring down. Whatever is left over is the remainder.
Can I get the exact same worksheet again later?
Yes. Every worksheet has a code, and the page link updates to include it. Bookmark or share the link and it will rebuild the identical worksheet and answer key.
How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?
Click Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print window. The worksheet is sized for letter paper.
