📄 Two-Step Equations Worksheet with Answers (Grade 8 Math)

A free printable two-step equations worksheet for Grade 8 math.

By Kris Reddy, Ontario teacher · Updated October 16, 2026 · 29 questions (30 marks) · PDF + answer key

This free two step equations worksheet walks Grade 8 students through solving equations one clear step at a time. After a quick one-step warm-up, every two-step equation has its own box with lines for Step 1, Step 2 and a Check, so students build the habit of showing their work and proving their answer.

Students then solve equations with brackets, fractions and decimals, read equations from drawn balance scales, turn sentences into equations, test whether a value is a solution, and solve three real-world problems about a taxi fare, a gym membership and saving for a bike. Every answer in the key shows the working and was checked by computer. To print it, use the Download button above.

The two step equations worksheet supports the Ontario Grade 8 math curriculum in the Algebra strand, where students solve equations involving multiple terms, whole numbers and decimals. Negative answers appear on purpose, so students learn that a solution doesn't have to be positive.

How to Solve a Two-Step Equation

An equation is like a balanced scale: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. To get the variable alone, undo the operations in reverse order:

StepWhat to do3x + 4 = 19
1Undo the adding or subtractingsubtract 4: 3x = 15
2Undo the multiplying or dividingdivide by 3: x = 5
3Check by substituting3(5) + 4 = 19 ✓

The same idea handles trickier forms. For 7 − 2k = −5, subtract 7 to get −2k = −12, then divide by −2 to get k = 6. For a fraction like x/4 + 3 = 10, subtract 3, then multiply by 4 to get x = 28. Part B of the two step equations worksheet includes all of these.

The Balance Model

Balance scales make equations visual. Each box holds the same unknown mass x, and the scale only balances when both sides are equal.

xxx419
Three boxes and a 4 balance 19, so 3x + 4 = 19. Take 4 off both sides, then share 15 among 3 boxes: x = 5.

Part D of the two step equations worksheet uses two drawn scales. Students write the equation each one shows, then solve it. For more on the idea of keeping both sides equal, see equation solving on Wikipedia.

Writing Equations from Words

Many students can solve an equation but struggle to write one. Look for the key phrases: "twice a number" is 2n, "five more than" means + 5, and "is" means =. So "five more than twice a number is 21" becomes 2n + 5 = 21, which gives n = 8. Watch out for brackets: "the sum of a number and 6, multiplied by 2" is 2(n + 6), not 2n + 6. Part E of the two step equations worksheet has four of these to translate and solve.

Two Step Equations Worksheet Answer Key

Open each part to check the two step equations worksheet answers. The printable key is on the last two pages of the PDF.

Part A answers (Q1–4)
  1. x = 8
  2. y = 15
  3. m = 7
  4. n = 45
Part B answers (Q5–10)
  1. subtract 5: 2x = 12; divide by 2: x = 6
  2. add 4: 3y = 24; divide by 3: y = 8
  3. subtract 12: 5n = −10; divide by 5: n = −2
  4. subtract 3: x/4 = 7; multiply by 4: x = 28
  5. subtract 7: −2k = −12; divide by −2: k = 6
  6. subtract 8: −3a = 21; divide by −3: a = −7
Part C answers (Q11–14)
  1. divide by 2: x + 3 = 9, so x = 6
  2. multiply by 3: n − 5 = 12, so n = 17
  3. subtract 1.5: 0.5x = 2.5, so x = 5
  4. divide by 4: y − 2 = −3, so y = −1
Part D answers (Q15–16)
  1. 3x + 4 = 19, so x = 5
  2. 2x + 7 = 15, so x = 4
Part E answers (Q17–20)
  1. 2n + 5 = 21, so n = 8
  2. n/3 − 4 = 2, so n = 18
  3. 3n − 7 = 20, so n = 9
  4. 2(n + 6) = 30, so n = 9
Part F answers (Q21–24)
  1. 3(4) − 5 = 7 ✓: Yes
  2. 4(2) + 9 = 17, not 15: No
  3. 2(−3) + 10 = 4 ✓: Yes
  4. 12/4 − 1 = 2, not 3: No
Part G answers (Q25–27)
  1. 3.50 + 2.25k = 21.50 → 2.25k = 18 → k = 8 km
  2. 25 + 15m = 130 → 15m = 105 → m = 7 months
  3. 40 + 12w = 172 → 12w = 132 → w = 11 weeks
Part H answers (Q28–29)
  1. Dividing by 2 must divide every term, so 6 becomes 3. Easier: subtract 6 first. 2x = 14, so x = 7. Check: 2(7) + 6 = 20 ✓
  2. To undo − 4 you add 4, not subtract it: 3x = 15, so x = 5. Check: 3(5) − 4 = 11 ✓

5 Common Two-Step Equation Mistakes

These are the errors that come up most when marking this two step equations worksheet. Part H targets two of them directly.

  1. Dividing only one term. In 2x + 6 = 20, dividing by 2 changes the 6 too. It's safer to subtract first.
  2. Using the same operation instead of the inverse. To undo − 4, add 4.
  3. Doing the steps in the wrong order. Undo adding or subtracting before multiplying or dividing.
  4. Losing the negative sign. In 7 − 2k = −5, the coefficient of k is −2, so divide by −2.
  5. Skipping the check. Substituting takes ten seconds and catches almost every error.
