How to Use This Generator

Type your weekly word list in the textarea — one word per line. The preview updates in real time. Choose a mode that matches what you need: a blank test for assessment, a practice sheet for at-home review, or a study list to send home earlier in the week.

The three modes

  • Test mode creates numbered blank lines for the classic spelling assessment format. The teacher reads each word aloud and the student writes it on the matching line.
  • Practice mode shows each word printed three times followed by a blank — perfect for at-home repetition and copying practice.
  • Study List mode displays the words clearly in a numbered list for memorization. Send this home Monday so kids can study before Friday's test.

Tips for teachers and parents

Match line style to grade level. Younger students (K–2) write better on the "Lined" style with a dashed midline that helps them size letters consistently. Older students do fine with the simple "Single" line.

Send all three home. Many teachers print all three variations for the same word list — Study List on Monday, Practice on Wednesday, Test on Friday. The repeated exposure cements the spelling.

Keep word lists focused. 8–15 words per week is the sweet spot. More than 20 overwhelms most kids; fewer than 8 doesn't give enough learning to bother with a test.

Spelling Word Lists by Grade

Need ideas for what words to teach? Here's a rough guide to age-appropriate spelling difficulty:

  • Kindergarten: CVC words (cat, dog, run, sit), simple sight words (the, and, is)
  • Grade 1: CVCe words (make, ride, hope), common digraphs (sh, ch, th), Dolch first 100
  • Grade 2: Vowel teams (rain, boat, see), compound words (sunset, playground), basic suffixes (-ed, -ing)
  • Grade 3: Multi-syllable words, common prefixes (re-, un-, pre-), homophones (their/there)
  • Grade 4–5: Greek and Latin roots (tele-, photo-, -graph), tricky homophones, frequently misspelled words

The default list pre-loaded above ("because, friend, school, laugh...") covers common Grade 2–3 spelling challenges. Replace it with your weekly list any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words can I add?

The tool comfortably handles 8–25 words on a single page. With 25+ words, the layout still works but the preview may not be as comfortable for younger writers — consider splitting into two tests.

Can I save a word list to use again next week?

Right now, no — each generated test is fresh. We recommend keeping your weekly lists in a doc or spreadsheet and pasting them in. Saved lists may come in a future update.

What's the difference between "Lined" and "Single" line?

Single line is a single solid line under each word — best for older students with established handwriting. Lined adds a dashed midline that helps younger students size their letters correctly (matches school handwriting paper).

Why is each word printed three times in Practice mode?

Multiple repetitions help kids internalize the letter sequence. After tracing or copying the word three times, they write it from memory in the blank — a proven approach for spelling retention.
