Calculate Percent Yield

Result:

What is Percent Yield?

Percent yield compares the amount of product actually collected in an experiment with the maximum amount of product predicted by calculations.

Percent Yield = (Actual Yield ÷ Theoretical Yield) × 100

A percent yield less than 100% usually means some product was lost during the experiment, the reaction did not go to completion, or side reactions occurred.

Worked Example

A student expects to produce 10.0 g of product, but only collects 8.5 g. What is the percent yield?

Percent Yield = (8.5 ÷ 10.0) × 100 = 85%

The percent yield is 85%.

Practice Question

A reaction has a theoretical yield of 25 g. The actual yield is 20 g. What is the percent yield?
