Molarity Calculator with Steps

Use this free molarity calculator to calculate the molarity of a solution using moles of solute and volume of solution in litres. This tool is useful for chemistry practice, lab reports, and solution concentration problems.

Calculate Molarity

What is Molarity?

Molarity is a measure of concentration. It tells us how many moles of solute are dissolved in one litre of solution.

Molarity (M) = moles of solute ÷ volume of solution in litres

The unit for molarity is mol/L, which is often written as M.

Worked Example

A solution contains 2.0 mol of sodium chloride dissolved in 0.5 L of solution. What is the molarity?

M = 2.0 mol ÷ 0.5 L = 4.0 M

The molarity of the solution is 4.0 M.

Practice Question

A solution contains 3 mol of solute in 1.5 L of solution. What is the molarity?
