What is the Dilution Formula?

The dilution formula is used when a concentrated solution is diluted by adding more solvent. The amount of solute stays the same, but the concentration decreases as volume increases.

C1V1 = C2V2
  • C1 = initial concentration
  • V1 = initial volume
  • C2 = final concentration
  • V2 = final volume

Worked Example

What volume of a 2.0 M stock solution is needed to prepare 1.0 L of a 0.5 M solution?

V1 = C2V2 ÷ C1
V1 = 0.5 × 1.0 ÷ 2.0 = 0.25 L

You need 0.25 L of the stock solution.

Practice Question

What volume of a 4.0 M stock solution is needed to prepare 2.0 L of a 1.0 M solution?
