What is Density?

Density is a measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume. It is commonly used to identify substances and determine whether objects will float or sink.

Density (D) = Mass (m) ÷ Volume (V)

Density units are typically g/cm³ or kg/m³.

Worked Example

A substance has a mass of 12 g and a volume of 3 cm³. What is the density?

D = 12 ÷ 3 = 4 g/cm³

The density is 4 g/cm³.

Practice Question

An object has a mass of 20 g and a volume of 5 cm³. What is the density?
