Matter can be classified into pure substances and mixtures. Mixtures are made by combining two or more substances that do not chemically bond together. They can be separated by physical means. Mixtures are divided into two main types: Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout. The different parts are not visible, and the mixture looks the same everywhere. Examples include saltwater and air. Heterogeneous mixtures have visibly different parts. The composition is not the same throughout, and you can usually see the different substances. Examples include salad and sand in water. In this activity, you will identify whether each substance listed is a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture.
